Quick New Year's Question

What is this thing about the person you kiss on New Year's, or the first kiss of the new year, or whatever? I've never heard of this before the last several months. My family always held hands and sang Auld Lang Syne. By always, I mean the years where we were with my extended family, which includes a great-aunt who insists on that. Otherwise we were usually asleep. Last year FG and I were on an airplane at midnight on New Year's Eve. We didn't kiss. We weren't kissing much anyway, in those days. Anyway: is this a newly invented tradition? Or have I been living under a rock, and you all have been kissing away every year since forever?

I have no idea, but I've kissed every year I've had a person to kiss. Including years where we've had whole roomsful of people kissing, and years where I've had to run across the house to get to SweetPea in time.

Yes! You are supposed to kiss someone at midnight on New Year's. Maybe you have been living under a rock? ;)

I'm pretty sure its just another reason to kiss. Which is definately not a bad thing.

Yes, you're supposed to kiss someone at midnight. My parents always made sure that they were in the same room at the stroke of midnight so that they could kiss. It was actually usually the only time I saw them kiss, just a peck on the lips. Our family usually calls each other after midnight, well, except the grandmothers.

I think it's just about starting off the year with the person you love and being as close as you can be (in public). It's about celebrating your love with the first kiss of the new year.

(Above comment mine, on the wrong account)

I have never done this, which makes me feel awfully sad. Ah well. I think I saw it done on the OC once, but apart from that? Nope, not really heard much about it.

Man, how depressing ;)

I'm pretty sure we've been kissing for many years. (I say 'we' as if I've had someone to kiss every year of my adult life. Really I'm just glad to have had someone for the past two years to kiss on NYE.) :)

Ok, I think we have a statistically significant sampling. The results confirm our initial hypothesis: I have been living under a rock.

Happy New Year, everyone, and happy kissing! And FG, may I suggest you pucker up sometime around, oh, 11:59?

The way I've heard it growing up and all through my life, it's not so much about kissing at the stroke of midnight as it is "Whatever you are doing at midnight, you'll be doing all year." I can't imagine anything better than kissing someone you WANT to be kissing...all year.
However I'm single, with no prospects... so I was sitting on my lounge chair surfing the web at Midnight. I hope that means I get a job where I can sit down and use the computer instead of being on my feet all day.../ramble.

I think you should snog as many as possible at whatever time of day or night but New Years is that perfect excuse!!
